Tough reads...

A few weeks ago, I got my hands on the March 4th-12th issue of the Economist. There were several articles focusing on the international war on baby girls.

Tough reads. I've provided links to a couple of the stories.

The war on baby girls

Gendercide: The worldwide war on baby girls

These articles continually remind me of how lucky we are that Josie's mother didn't choose abortion or death shortly after her birth. As much as it might have been obvious that she had serious heart conditions, an extra thumb would have been equally met with disapproval. I'll never forgot how rude the doctor in Guangzhou was about her extra digit. You would have thought she had a disease by his response to her second thumb.

Included in this issue was a book review titled, Message from an Unknown Chinese Mother: Stories of Loss and Love by Xinran.

I've ordered it.
I'm already planning on having a tissue box next to me when I read it.
I'm also planning hugging Josie a little bit tighter.

Hugs to all my adoptive friends too.

  1. Yes, indeed, we need to hug our kids tightly and praise God for the decisions their birth mothers made and the path that led us to them!

  2. I will try to come back and read the articles you posted. It is heartbreaking to know that little girls are treated so poorly in some countries.

  3. Break my heart. I admire birth mothers who choose life. We live in such a crazy world.

You are soooo blessed to be Josie's mom!

  4. I had read the second one article already. So heartbreaking.

I have heard of the book too, but I don't know if my heart can take it right now. I do want to read it. You should have a blog book club! Now then I'd have to read along with you.

OK, going to catch up on your family!

  6. We are blessed indeed to have our girls! I am forever grateful to Mia's birth mother for the amazing gift of Mia. I will have to read the book you mentioned. I have never heard of it. I second the opinion of a blog book club!

  7. I'm going to dive into those links in the next few days. (We had out of town guests that just left today.) Thanks for the links! And I'm waiting on my ordered copy of that book, too.
