Celebrating "Year of the Horse" in Josie's classroom!

I've been blessed that every year since Josie was in preschool, she's been allowed to share her special holiday with her classmates.
This year, we watched a couple of short videos provided by Panda Express, read some background information on Chinese New Year customs, and then each student was given time to decorate a horse for their paper lantern.
They all did a fabulous job.  I brought my hot glue gun and helped attach a googly eye and a long black feather as a tail for their horse.
I also found a "horse" mask at this link which I cut out and attached to a cardboard handle.
Aren't they cute!?!
The red envelopes, chocolate gold coins and fortune cookies are always a hit.  But the most favorite part of the CNY lesson is the bubble wrap "firecrackers".  We closed the door to the classroom because we were having so much fun making noise with our firecrackers.
On Friday night, we celebrated the start of the CNY with a feast of Chinese food and letting off a single sky lantern from our very snowy backyard.
Wishing you a Happy New Year!  Kung Hay Fat Choy!

Great photos Kim - It looks like the lesson plan and CNY a activities were a huge hit! I love all of the ideas and looks like Josie's classmates did too. One day I hope we can release a lantern!

I think it is wonderful that you take time to go in to do this with her class. You want to take your show on the road and head to Ohio???

What a wonderful celebration for Josie. I am so glad you chose to celebrate this with her every year. So many times adopted children's heritage falls completely by the wayside. You are wonderful parents! xo Diana

What fun you provided for Josie and her classmates. Bet the firecrackers were a big treat!

Love the sky lantern. Brought back memories of the final night of Art Prize year before last. Stunning wasn't it? Can you let me know where you purchase the sky lanterns?

I didn't know the whole story. What a treasure. My daughter hash been struggling with infertility for 6 years. It has broken my heart. My daughter was ready for adoption, my son in law, not. They have started the IVF process. I am praying. It's great to hear about another's walk. Was your first child adopted? I didn't get that far. Beautiful children. You are doing all the right things. It's hard to find the balance sometimes.
