I'm definitely going to borrow some ideas from this blog for Josie's preschool class. I am also planning on sending this book to school with Josie.
Because moon cakes are an acquired taste (and that's being polite) I'm sending sugar cookies with Josie to preschool.
You can find a moon cake and tea coloring page here. I picked up red paper lanterns at our local dollar store and had Josie decorate them with gold star stickers and tissue paper streamers. Any chance to use scissors, stickers and tape makes her very happy.
We're going back to our favorite local Chinese restaurant Wednesday night to celebrate.
Here's a short video that talks about moon cakes and lanterns.

Thanks for your great tips! I may have to borrow some of your ideas! Happy Autumn Moon to you and your family!
Janet
I know what you mean about the moon cakes..... Remember what Anli said when I blogged about how awful they are? Still, I bought some at our local Asian market again this year!!
Happy MAMF to you and your sweet family!!
I ALWAYS love your creativity, Kim. Wish I had even an ounce of it. :) We actually have two Moon Festivals in our area...one is at a university put on by the Asian Student Association and they do it up BIG! The other is in the Chinatown part of our big city and very authentic. Now that I think about it I think there are 3 with another one that is held by the Chinese Association and they cook up everything authentic too. We've done 2 of the 3 in the past, but don't think we're gonna make any of them this year with our schedules. :( So, it really alleviates the need for us to have to do something at home when we're attending big Moon Festivals...though I may have to take your ideas this year and do it with Kaylin. :)
Hi Kim,
Our Families with Children from China group is having a Moon Festival celebration at a local park this Friday with pot-luck and lanterns. This year the group/families have bought the lanterns. So I am anxious to see what we are going to do with them.
I found an easy way to decorate cupcakes while celebrating the moon festival. . .You know Tori and her love to decorate cupcakes with sprinkles! So she and I are taking this along with a cheese ball with crackers as our contribution.
Have a great meal on Wednesday!
Much love,
Cindy
We are so sad that we can't get together this year. You throw the best parties EVER. I am not sure what we will do at this point. I have terra cota Moon Festival lanterns, so I know we will put them out and then maybe just go out to eat.
Wonderful way to celebrate Josie's heritage! Hard to slow down once school starts. Thanks again for sharing so much of yourself and your beautiful family!
You are such a fun mama! I love all of your ideas! I wish I could join you for Chinese food! Sesame Chicken is my favorite!
I'm bummed that it didn't work out to get together, it would be such fun to get together again.
We're planning on the Halloween party and looking forward to it.
This was a great post Kim! I loved the video clip--very informative! I saw moon cakes while watching Kailan the other day and was curious as to how the were made--now I know!Your lanterns looked awesome!
