Gingerbread dollhouse

Do you construct gingerbread houses each Christmas? We do and I always feel sad when they end up in the trash at the end of holidays. Last Easter, I found these wooden CD holders at Michael's and made a dollhouse for Josie.

The CD holders are around five dollars and they are the perfect size for fisherprice little people, littlest petshop characters, polly pockets or bunny families.

When I saw her playing with it over the weekend, it reminded me of the Christmas gingerbread house that I still hadn't dug out of the kitchen cupboard. I decided to skip the traditional gingerbread kit and go buy another CD holder (or two) and turn them into permanent gingerbread dollhouse. In case you want to make one for yourself, Micheal's had several of these CD houses in stock on Sunday. The plastic candy embellishments are currently marked down 50% right now too. Run to the store!

Instructions for making the little girl from wooden beads can be found here on my blog.

I made the little Chinese girls as party favors for an adoption shower and have adapted them into bunnies too.

Gingerbread Dollhouse Supplies:

Brown paint (I used spray paint to speed up the drying process)
Wooden house cd holder
Plastic candies and miniature embellishments
Pipe cleaners, trim and lace
White glue and brush
Fine white glitter
Glue gun
Scrapbooking paper

Step 1. Spray paint your house brown and let dry.

Michael's even has these puzzle dollhouse furniture pieces available in their wooden craft supplies aisle. I haven't constructed them, but they look simple enough that Emma can help me.

Step 2. Using a brush, coat your roof with glue and cover with scrapbooking paper. You could also cover the roof with white polyfil for snow if you didn't want to use scrapbooking paper.
Step 3. Using your glue gun, add line a glue around the edge of the roof and add pipe cleaners for trim. I used clothes pins to keep the pipe cleaners in place as it was drying.

Step 4. Add plastic candy embellishments with glue gun, brush with a light coating of white glue (diluted with water) and dust with fine glitter.

Step 5. Hot glue lace on the interior windows for curtains.

Step 6. Fill with little characters, a bottle brush tree, some miniature packages, and have fun playing!

Merry Christmas and Happy Crafting!
PS. Even grown-up girls deserve a dollhouse.

Oh my goodness! What sweet little houses!

We do a gingerbread house workshop at our Children's Museum every year. Unfortunately, it's made out of cardboard so it gets tossed in January!

Beautiful! I love that it is something that the kids can play with from year to year(instead of the breakable Nativity). I see a trip to Michael's in the future!

Oh my gosh, these are just the cutest ever! The little Chinese girls and bunnies are so sweet! And I love all of the faux candy and of course the glitter, too! What a great idea, so much better than an actual gingerbread house that you have to toss at the end of the season. You are so creative!!!

Is it wrong that I so want to make on these, like now? Justin and I have an ongoing gingerbread competion with my brothers every year (well except for this one...sad face) So we may have to try this out next year instead :0)

Just adorable...everyone would like a gingerbread house like this! Even me and I am all grown up.(-: And this one can be saved from year to year...marvelous!

So very cute! It is great that it can be saved too. And, in some ways, easier than a traditional gingerbread house.

Well that was even cuter than I was anticipating! What a great idea! I wonder how a gingerbread beach house would look...

I love how glittery it all is - and you don't snack on the candy while making it and then feel sick afterward. This is a great idea!
