March is National Reading Month

As a former librarian, I'm going to start out by saying that every month should be National Reading Month, but March is considered the official month. Emma's school is doing several different activities to celebrate reading. I love how they include DEAR (drop everything and read) on a daily basis.

To honor Dr. Seuss, the Apples4Teachers website is filled with all kinds of Dr. Seuss activities.

Scholastic has a great March calendar of daily reading activities available here.

I've listed a few of my favorite activities from their calendar:

March 5th (visit the library and check out a book)
March 10th (ask your parents what their favorite books are)
March 13th (turn off the tv and pick up a book)
March 14th (when serving Mom breakfast in bed, be sure to include something for her to read)
March 23rd (create your own special place to curl up with a good book)
March 29th (put your imagination to work and ask your parents to help write a story that's all about you)

I've got two different books started (Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance by Barack Obama & Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution by Ji-li Jiang).

Emma is currently enjoying the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney. Josie is obsessed with Green Eggs and Ham and Go Dogs Go.

Chris has been reading In Search of Harry Potter by Steve Vander Ark.

What's currently on your nightstand?

I can't wait for March 15, breakfast in bed with a book : )

I have Blue Like Jazz on my night stand and just picked up A lion among men (volume 3 of the Wicked series) and 10 Days in the Hills, from the library. National reading month is for wimps: I agree with you Kim every month should be reading month!

we are into everything Fireman and Pirate related. But there are some great girl power pirate books out - The Night Pirates, and The Girl Pirate.

For moms, Check out, "water for Elephants" best great read in a while.

I love that picture of Josie and Emma looking at each other. The love is just so clear and beautiful.
I'm glad Josie likes books. Lili just cannot tolerate reading or being read to. That's the main issue in school. She just gets so bored with it.....oh well, she'll learn I suppose.
(oh and by the way, since I don't have a nightstand right now, Jean Plaidy's "The Star of Lancaster")
LOOOVE Jean Plaidy's books, series of British history/monarchs. I read them over and over and over....so why did we have 27 boxes of books?? Just the librarian in me I guess :)

I LOVE to read, Gracie LOVES to read, Halie...well, not so much. I truly have to make her read every night. At least one of my kids enjoys a good book! There is truly nothing I like more than to cozy up with a good book and let hours just pass on by. At the moment I am reading Just Walk Across the Room by Bill Hybels. It's a great book about pointing people to faith in a "soft" way.
Happy Reading, Kenwards!
